Detectives investigating suspicious fires at Energy Court – One individual located deceased in tent

The fatal fire at Energy Court on June 11, 2026, is being investigated as a homicide.

Following a post-mortem examination conducted by the Coroner’s Office, along with additional testing, the deceased has been identified as a 41-year-old man from Greater Sudbury. His name will not be released out of respect for his next of kin. Our deepest condolences are extended to his family, friends, and all those affected by this incident.

The investigation has determined that several individuals were seen fleeing the two tents immediately after the fire began at approximately 3:20 a.m. on June 11, 2026.

Officers continue to canvass the area and review video surveillance footage in an effort to gather additional information.

Around 3:40 a.m. this morning, June 11, 2026, Greater Sudbury Police, Fire and Paramedic Services were dispatched to Energy Court in relation to two tents on fire.

Upon extinguishing the fires, emergency responders located a deceased individual inside one of the tents. No other individuals have reported injuries.

The deceased individual’s identity is currently unknown. A postmortem will be conducted through the Coroner’s Office to assist in determining the individual’s identity and the cause of death.

The fires are being treated as suspicious as the circumstances leading to the incident have not yet been confirmed.

Officers remain on scene and there will be a police presence at Energy Court throughout the day.

Detectives in the Major Crime Section are working in collaboration with the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office to determine the cause of the fire.
