GSPS not participating in federal government Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program

The Greater Sudbury Police Service is not participating in the federal government’s Assault‑Style Firearms Compensation Program.

This program is administered by the Government of Canada, and participation by municipal police services is not mandatory, as the program is designed and delivered at the federal level.

We have reviewed the available program information and determined that our resources are best focused on our core mandate of frontline response, holding offenders accountable, crime prevention, and a human-centred approach to community safety and well-being, rather than administering a federal collection program. These priorities reflect the same considerations highlighted publicly by many other municipal police services in discussions around program implementation.

We remain committed to initiatives that deliver the greatest impact on public safety – responding to violent crime, identifying and disrupting organized crime involving illegal firearms and drug trafficking, proactively addressing road safety concerns, conducting thorough investigations and supporting survivors and victims. These priorities continue to guide how we allocate our personnel, time, and resources.
