Officers charge seven drivers with impaired-related offences over the weekend

Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) officers arrested seven impaired drivers between Friday and Sunday through proactive patrols, traffic stops, responses to traffic complaints, motor vehicle collision investigations, and targeted enforcement initiatives.

Over the course of the weekend, officers investigated several reports of suspected impaired driving across Greater Sudbury. These investigations resulted in seven drivers being removed from local roadways, including motorists involved in a collision, individuals reported by members of the public, and drivers stopped during proactive enforcement efforts.

Those charged included:

A 20-year-old woman was arrested following a collision investigation in the South End. In addition to impaired driving offences, the investigation revealed the driver was operating a vehicle without a qualified accompanying driver, had a blood alcohol concentration above zero as a novice driver, failed to surrender her licence, and had taken a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested following a traffic stop conducted after officers observed a vehicle leaving a licensed establishment. The investigation revealed the driver was impaired, prohibited from driving, operating without the required ignition interlock device, driving as a novice driver with alcohol in her system, and operating an uninsured vehicle.

A 62-year-old man was arrested following a traffic stop during an investigation in Hanmer. The driver was charged with impaired operation and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.

A 20-year-old man was arrested after officers responded to a traffic complaint regarding a suspected impaired driver. The investigation revealed the driver was impaired, suspended from driving, and in contravention of novice and young driver alcohol restrictions.

A 36-year-old driver was stopped following a report of a suspected impaired driver in the Downtown core. The investigation determined the driver had consumed alcohol and registered a blood alcohol concentration within the warn range. The driver's licence was suspended for seven days.

A 46-year-old man was arrested after multiple members of the public reported a vehicle being driven erratically and crossing into oncoming traffic. The driver was charged with impaired operation and dangerous operation.

A 53-year-old woman was arrested following a report of a suspected impaired driver in the East End. The investigation revealed the driver was prohibited from driving under the Criminal Code of Canada, driving while suspended, operating an uninsured vehicle, and using licence plates not authorized for the vehicle.

Every driver charged with impaired operation over 80 or deemed impaired following a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluation received an immediate 90-day driver's licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.
