Officers identify and charge two individuals in connection with thefts from vehicles and fraud-related offences in Capreol

Through an investigation into a series of thefts from vehicles and subsequent fraudulent use of stolen property, Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) officers have identified and charged two individuals in connection with multiple incidents that occurred in the Capreol area.

On August 24, 2026, between approximately 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., a male and female suspect gained access to several vehicles in the Capreol area and stole various items belonging to multiple victims. Stolen property included wallets, credit cards, Apple AirPods, Apple Watches, and other personal belongings. In several instances, stolen credit cards were subsequently used at businesses throughout Greater Sudbury.

Through the investigation, officers were able to identify the individuals believed to be responsible and connect them to multiple theft and fraud-related incidents.

As a result of the investigation, officers have laid a total of 47 criminal charges, including:

• 16 counts of Theft Under $5,000
• 10 counts of Fraud Under $5,000
• 10 counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
• 10 counts of Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card
• 1 count of Failure to Comply with a Probation Order

Their names cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.

This investigation highlights the importance of securing vehicles and removing valuables from sight. GSPS continues to investigate thefts from vehicles across Greater Sudbury, with many incidents involving no signs of forced entry. Individuals often gain access to vehicles by checking for unlocked doors in neighbourhoods, parking lots, and residential driveways.

Leaving property in a vehicle can make it a target for theft. Commonly stolen items include wallets, purses, credit cards, cash, electronics, identification documents, keys, and other valuables. In many cases, stolen credit cards and identification can then be used to facilitate additional criminal offences, including fraud.

To help prevent thefts from vehicles, GSPS encourages community members to:

• Always lock vehicle doors, even when parked in a driveway or garage
• Remove valuables from sight or take them with you
• Secure belongings in the trunk if they must be left in the vehicle
• Park in well-lit, highly visible areas whenever possible
• Avoid leaving keys, garage door openers, or identification documents inside vehicles

GSPS also reminds residents to report all thefts from vehicles and suspicious activity, even when nothing appears to have been stolen. Information provided through reports helps officers identify patterns, determine areas of concern, and support targeted enforcement and patrol initiatives aimed at preventing future incidents.
