Officers remove 15 drivers from roadways after impaired-related incidents over the weekend

Between Friday and Sunday, Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) officers removed 15 drivers from our roads through proactive patrols, traffic stops, responses to traffic complaints, motor vehicle collision investigations, and targeted enforcement initiatives.

Throughout the weekend, officers investigated multiple reports of suspected impaired driving across Greater Sudbury. These investigations resulted in a combination of Criminal Code charges, Highway Traffic Act offences, and licence suspensions involving motorists stopped during Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) spot checks, proactive enforcement efforts, traffic complaint investigations, and calls for service.

Of the 15 drivers:

• Ten drivers registered a blood alcohol concentration within the Warn Range and received immediate seven-day driver's licence suspensions.
• Several drivers faced additional charges related to offences including driving while suspended, failing to comply with probation or release conditions, operating a vehicle without insurance, and permit-related violations.
• Five drivers were charged with impaired driving-related Criminal Code offences, including impaired operation and failure to comply with a demand.
• Two impaired driving investigations also resulted in drug-related charges, including possession of a Schedule I Substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
• One youth driving a motorcycle was charged with 17 offences, including stunt driving, impaired driving-related offences, and breaching release conditions.

Drivers charged with impaired operation, operation while over 80, refusal or failure to comply with a demand, or deemed impaired following a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluation received an immediate 90-day driver's licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.
