Police Seize Drugs and Weapon Following Arrest of Impaired Motorcyclist

On July 19, 2026, at approximately 7:26 p.m., police received a report of a suspected impaired driver in the New Sudbury area. The caller advised that a man operating a motorcycle appeared disoriented and was nodding off while riding.

Patrol officers quickly canvassed the area and located the motorcycle matching the description provided. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop by activating their emergency lights and sirens; however, the rider failed to stop and fled the area.

A short time later, officers located the motorcycle again nearby. The rider attempted to turn around and evade police a second time but was safely taken into custody without incident.

During a search incident to arrest, officers located a collapsible baton, a large quantity of cash, and a significant amount of suspected controlled substances.

Officers also observed signs of drug impairment. A Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) was conducted, and the driver performed poorly. He was subsequently arrested for impaired operation. An evaluation conducted by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) determined that the man was impaired by drugs. 

The man was also found to be prohibited from driving as a result of a previous Criminal Code conviction.

As part of the investigation, police seized approximately:

• 86 grams of cocaine

• 15.6 grams of fentanyl

• 3.4 grams of methamphetamine

• Nine suspected hydromorphone pills

As a result, the 54-year-old Greater Sudbury man has been charged with the following offences pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act:

• Five counts of Trafficking in a Schedule I Controlled Substance

• Operation While Prohibited

• Operation While Impaired by Drugs

• Flight from a Peace Officer

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

• Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose

• Carrying a Concealed Weapon

The man's name cannot be released at this time, as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process. He remains in police custody and is awaiting a bail hearing to answer to the charges.
