Results of CRU enforcement and engagement initiative downtown

Recently, members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service Community Response Unit concluded an enforcement and engagement initiative in the downtown core.

The initiative focused on addressing concerns related to open-air public drug use, criminal activity, and social disorder while supporting efforts to connect vulnerable individuals with community resources and services.

During the initiative, officers:

  • Executed 41 outstanding arrest warrants, resulting in the arrest of 23 individuals
  • Held 12 individuals for bail proceedings
  • Made 14 arrests under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Seized 11.2 grams of fentanyl
  • Conducted 18 referrals to community and support services, with eight individuals accepting referrals

This initiative reflects a balanced approach that combines targeted enforcement with proactive community engagement. Through enforcement efforts, officers address criminal activity and individuals who pose a risk to public safety. At the same time, officers work to identify opportunities to connect vulnerable individuals with supports aimed at addressing the underlying factors contributing to substance use, homelessness, and other social challenges.

The Community Response Unit remains committed to maintaining a visible presence in the downtown core, addressing criminal activity, responding to community concerns, and working collaboratively with the Downtown Sudbury Business Improvement Area (BIA), the City of Greater Sudbury, Health Sciences North, Canadian Mental Health Association, healthcare providers, social service agencies, and other community partners to build a safer and healthier downtown.

Through these partnerships, police efforts are increasingly focused on evidence-based solutions that prioritize both public safety and individual well-being. By connecting vulnerable individuals with available supports and services while addressing criminal behaviour, the Greater Sudbury Police Service will continue working toward a downtown that is safe, welcoming, and supportive for all who live, work, and visit the area.
