Road Safety Enforcement Initiative Results – October 18-31

The Greater Sudbury Police Service launched its Road Safety Enforcement Initiative on October 18, 2026, with dedicated officers conducting targeted enforcement in high-priority areas across the city. During the first two weeks of the initiative, from October 18 to October 31, 2026, officers conducted focused enforcement activities aimed at addressing dangerous driving behaviours and improving road safety throughout Greater Sudbury.

The initiative was established through funding provided by the City of Greater Sudbury through Ontario's Road Safety Initiatives Fund. On May 19, 2026, city council members unanimously approved allocating $500,000 to support enhanced traffic enforcement in high-priority and high-complaint areas across Greater Sudbury. The one-year initiative will run from October 2026 through October 2027, providing opportunities for officers to work dedicated traffic enforcement shifts outside of their regular schedules.

As part of the initiative, up to two officers per day are dedicated exclusively to road safety enforcement, contributing between 6 and 24 hours of focused enforcement daily. Enforcement efforts are being conducted at 89 locations throughout Greater Sudbury, identified through analysis of previous Automated Speed Enforcement zones, community traffic complaints, and concerns reported through online reporting.

The initiative is focused on addressing traffic behaviours and offences that pose significant risks to public safety, including speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt compliance, school bus violations, fail-to-stop offences, and other Highway Traffic Act violations.

During the first two weeks of enforcement, officers:

  • Issued 238 Provincial Offence Notices
    • 127 for speeding
    • 36 for fail to stop at stop signs
    • 13 for driving without a valid driver's licence
    • Additional charges related to licence plates, vehicle documentation, and other Highway Traffic Act offences
  • Issued 67 warnings
  • Conducted 50 Mandatory Alcohol Screenings

The initiative was developed to enhance proactive traffic enforcement through an intelligence-led approach that combines community feedback with traffic and enforcement data. Information submitted through online reporting, historical enforcement trends, previous Automated Speed Enforcement locations, and other operational intelligence are used to identify emerging concerns and ensure enforcement resources are deployed where they can have the greatest impact on road safety.

Road safety remains a shared responsibility. Through a combination of education, enforcement, and community engagement, the Greater Sudbury Police Service remains committed to reducing dangerous driving behaviours and improving safety for everyone.
