Safer Streets Stronger Communities IMPACT Initiative

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) working in collaboration with the Central Community Response (CRU) Unit and Patrol Operations, remains committed to disrupting the trafficking of illicit drugs in the downtown core and throughout our jurisdiction. Street-level drug trafficking poses a significant threat to the safety, security and well-being of our community.

From August 18 to August 21, 2026, as part of an ongoing effort to address illicit drug activity in our downtown core, members of the DEU, CRU and Patrol Operations conducted a focused drug trafficking initiative in the downtown core of Sudbury.

The initiative resulted in the following:

• Execution of 4 outstanding warrants
• Arrest of 7 individuals for outstanding warrants and/or new charges
• 11 additional charges laid under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
• Seizure of 1 set of brass knuckles

Seizure of illicit drugs with an estimated street value of approximately $3,000, including:

• 20 grams of crack cocaine
• 6.7 grams of fentanyl
• 17 Hydromorphone pills (12mg each)
• 1 Codeine pill (30mg)
  
  
• Seizure of $320 in Canadian currency

The operation was led by Detectives from the DEU, who conducted intelligence-led investigations and surveillance to identify street-level drug traffickers, make arrests, and hold offenders accountable.

The Central Community Response Unit (CRU) plays a critical role in proactively and reactively addressing concerns, issues and crimes in the downtown core. Through regular foot and bike patrols, officers build relationships with residents and businesses, respond to crimes in progress, and address individuals who pose an elevated risk to public safety through warrant apprehension and bail compliance.

Patrol Operations play a vital role by responding to calls for service, supporting enforcement efforts, and maintaining a visible presence throughout Greater Sudbury.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service continues to take a coordinated, intelligence-led approach to drug enforcement through proactive investigations, community engagement, and strong collaborative partnerships. Together, we remain committed to disrupting illicit drug activity and enhancing public safety.

The following photographs demonstrate that the seized drugs were pre-weighed and packaged for street-level distribution. While these may not represent the largest drug seizures, the impact of these arrests is significant. By targeting street-level drug trafficking, officers are helping to reduce the availability of illicit drugs and disrupt associated criminal activity in the downtown core. Enforcement efforts aimed at addressing open drug use and drug trafficking will continue in the downtown core and surrounding areas.
