Sudbury Community (World) Cup – September 12 & 13 James Jerome Sports Complex

Fresh off the excitement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted across Canada, the United States and Mexico, Greater Sudbury is bringing that same spirit of competition, culture and community to the local stage.

Today, we officially launched the Sudbury Community (World) Cup, a unique tournament that will see 10 teams representing cultures, communities and organizations from across Greater Sudbury come together for a weekend of soccer, friendship and community pride.

What began in 2023 as a friendly soccer match between members of the Nigerian community and the Greater Sudbury Police Service has evolved into a city-wide celebration of diversity and inclusion. In 2025, the “Community Cup” trophy was introduced and awarded to the Nigerian community after defeating GSPS by a score of 5-2.

"Three years ago, a simple invitation to play soccer created an opportunity to connect with one another outside of our everyday roles," said Chief Sara Cunningham. "Today, that same spirit has grown into a tournament that brings together communities from across Greater Sudbury. The Sudbury Community (World) Cup demonstrates the power of sport to build relationships, create understanding and strengthen the bonds that make our community stronger."

After the introduction of the “Community Cup”, interest in the initiative continued to grow with additional cultural communities expressing a desire to participate. That momentum ultimately led to the creation of the Sudbury Community (World) Cup.

The inaugural tournament features teams representing:

• Greater Sudbury Police Service
• Nigeria
• Italy
• Cameroon
• Ghana
• Côte d'Ivoire
• Senegal
• Arabian Knights
• Chile
• Colombia

While competition on the field will be fierce, the tournament's true purpose extends far beyond the final score.

The event celebrates multiculturalism, promotes inclusion, encourages positive engagement, and creates opportunities for people from different backgrounds to come together through a shared love of the game.
