UPDATE - ITSU investigating fatal collision involving young pedestrian on Second Avenue

UPDATE

As a result of the investigation into the collision that claimed the life of a 6-year-old, girl on May 19, 2026, members of the Integrated Traffic Safety Unit (ITSU) have charged a 58-year-old, woman from Greater Sudbury with the following offences under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and Cannabis Control Act;

·         Careless driving causing death HTA

·         Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available Cannabis Control Act 

She will appear in court on August 4, 2026, to answer to the charges. Her name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.

 

ORIGINAL

Just before 3:30 p.m. on May 19, 2026, Greater Sudbury Police Service officers responded to a serious collision involving a pedestrian in the area of 129 Second Avenue.

Emergency personnel immediately initiated CPR and other life-saving measures at the scene. A 6-year-old girl was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.

Out of respect for the family’s wishes and privacy during this incredibly difficult time, her name will not be released.

We extend our deepest condolences to the child’s family, friends, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic loss.

At this stage of the investigation, police can confirm the incident did not occur on the roadway. The child had safely exited a school bus prior to the incident, which occurred on private property within a residential parking area. There is currently no indication the school bus was directly involved in the incident.

The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Integrated Traffic Safety Unit (ITSU) continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators are continuing to gather witness statements and review all available evidence to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police ask the community to respect the privacy of the family during this extremely difficult time.
