ORIGINAL
Just after 3:45 p.m. on August 13, 2026, the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), Greater Sudbury Fire Services and Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services were dispatched to Crowley Lake in response to a report of a missing person.
Information received indicated that three individuals had been in a canoe on the lake when it capsized. Two of the individuals were located by kayakers in the area and brought safely to shore; however, the third individual and the canoe remained unaccounted for.
Members of Greater Sudbury Fire Services and the GSPS Marine Unit conducted a search of the water, while members of the Integrated Traffic Safety Unit (ITSU) and K9 Unit searched the shoreline using all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and a police service dog.
An aerial search was also conducted with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Aviation Services helicopter and the GSPS Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS).
The canoe has since been located; however, the 26-year-old man remains missing.
Search efforts are ongoing. GSPS officers will continue searching on foot and by air using the RPAS, while members of the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit will conduct searches of the water.
Residents can expect an increased police presence in the Crowley Lake area as search efforts continue.
We thank residents for their patience and cooperation and ask that members of the public avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to safely and effectively carry out ongoing search operations.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
