March is Fraud Prevention Month
Fraud Prevention Month aims to help Canadians recognize warning signs, reject suspicious claims and report fraud to the authorities.
Beware of some of the tactics that scammers use:
- Spoofing: Fraudsters can change the caller-ID that is displayed on your phone, the sender address in an email and often mimic legitimate websites
- Urgency: By pressuring you to comply with their demands, they are trying to give you less time to consider whether the request is suspicious

DEU Seizes $19,400 in Drugs and $6,000 in Cash from Drug TraffickerOn February 17th, 2024, Detectives from the Greater Sudbury Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) concluded an investigation regarding an individual from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) who was believed to be trafficking illicit drugs in Greater Sudbury.
Detectives from the Integrated Crime Section, along with the assistance of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)-led Provincial Guns and Gangs Enforcement Team arrested a 39-year-old male from the GTA on.

Incident on Jean Street - Special Investigations Unit investigating the incidentOff-duty police officer arrested and charged after incident in EspanolaOn February 13, 2024, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested and charged 50-year-old, Melisa Rancourt with Assault, Uttering Threats and Cause a Disturbance in relation to an incident that occurred on February 11, 2024 in Espanola while off-duty.
Melisa Rancourt has been a Constable with the Greater Sudbury Police Service since 2018.

Overnight, officers held the scene on Cabot Street as Detectives applied for a search warrant of the residence. Our Forensic Identification Unit processed multiple scenes and several witnesses were interviewed.

Requesting assistance to locate missing person 62-year-old Michael VagniniUPDATE 11
As a result of the investigation into the death of Michael Vagnini conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police in collaboration with the Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Coroner’s Office, foul play has been ruled out. A post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024, confirming that his death was attributed to medical causes, the details of which will remain private in consultation with his family.

On February 12, 2024, officers arrested and charged 41-year-old, Daniel Calestagne in relation to this matter. He has been charged with Assault and Forcible Confinement in relation to the incident that took place on December 1, 2023.
