“I am a 911 call taker and dispatcher for Greater Sudbury Police and Fire Services. I dispatch police cruisers and fire trucks to emergencies over the radio. It’s a great career because it’s absolutely never routine or predictable. It’s a very busy, fast-paced career and it can be very rewarding.

You never know what you’re going to get. I have to use my brain to try to diffuse intense situations where people are in crisis and quickly send emergency services. There is a lot of multi-tasking and never a dull moment. I never thought I would be the voice on the other end of 911.

Word of advice: Get your typing and multi-tasking skills up, make yourself very familiar with the geography of Sudbury and common landmarks. Surround yourself with people who support you and push you in a positive direction. Never opt out of an opportunity for training or education. Knowledge is never lost. Never let anyone else tell you what your capabilities are. Dispatching is an exciting role in a police service.”
