Background

The Opioid Crisis consistently demonstrates the devastating effects of Opioids on our community, the province and the nation due to accidental overdoses.

In November of 2019, the Greater Sudbury Police Service Integrated Crime Section (I.C.S.) working in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (O.C.E.B.) commenced multiple investigations intending to disrupt drug trafficking operations entering and operating within the City of Greater Sudbury.

Investigation

In October of 2020, Detectives conducted an investigation into a suspected drug distribution criminal enterprise operating within the City of Greater Sudbury. 

Shortly after 11:00 p.m. on November 4, 2020, Members of our I.C.S. and Emergency Response Unit (Tactical Unit) along with the Ontario Provincial Police O.C.E.B. executed three Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Search Warrants at addresses located in Greater Sudbury.

As a result of the three C.D.S.A. Search Warrants the following were seized by Detectives;

  • 63 grams of Cocaine
  • 49 grams of Fentanyl
  • 114 Methamphetamine tablets
  • $3,350.00 Canadian currency

The total street value of the Drugs seized is an estimated $27,000. The amount of Fentanyl seized represents approximately 490 street level doses that could have reached the community.

Two individuals from Greater Sudbury and one individual from the Greater Toronto Area were arrested and charged in relation to the following C.D.S.A. and Criminal Code offences;

  • Possession of a Controlled Schedule I Substance (Fentanyl)
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Schedule I substance (Cocaine)
  • Possession of a Controlled Schedule I Substance (Methamphetamine)
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000 (Currency)

One of the individuals was additionally charged with Breach of Probation Order.

The Drug Enforcement Unit of the Integrated Crime Section remains committed to working collaboratively with the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau and will continue to focus its efforts on major crime operations that pose a direct and elevated threat to the safety, security and wellness of our community. The Integrated Crime Section aims to identify and disrupt organized crime in Greater Sudbury through innovative technology, collaborative partnerships and traditional Police work resulting in the arrests of those involved, holding them accountable for their criminal activities and the seizure of illegal drugs, prohibited firearms and proceeds of crime.
