Shortly after 10:45 a.m. this morning, December 31, 2023, a 60-year-old community member was on the ice of Onwatin Lake when witnesses saw the individual go through the ice. 

People on scene immediately attempted to provide assistance and contacted emergency responders. A coordinated response involving Police, City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services and City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services were dispatched to the area resulting in the recovery of the individual who was unconscious.

Immediate lifesaving efforts were initiated however the individual succumbed to the immersion in the cold water. and was pronounced deceased. 

Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of the individual involved in this tragic incident. Out of respect for the family we will not be releasing the name of the individual involved.

 

Officers are working in collaboration with the Coroner's Office.
