International Women’s Day is recognized every year on March 8th. It is an important day to acknowledge the achievements and contributions of women and to renew discussion about the importance of gender equality in Canada and around the world.

On March 8th and EVERY day, we celebrate the women who work and volunteer at GSPS and the strength they bring to our Service.
Leading up to International Women’s Day and throughout the month, we’d like to introduce you to some of the amazing women of our GSPS family.

Meet Constable Karly Gosselin:police officer standing beside cruiser

Q: What inspired you to become a Police Officer with the Greater Sudbury Police Service?
A: When I was young, I used to think all police officers were super heroes. I wasn’t entirely sure what police officers did but I knew they had a vital role in keeping my family and I safe. When I was school aged, I remember we had a visit from Cst. Fraser. I remember feeling a sense of safety when she would visit the school and I remember being so amazed that she was a police woman. I remember thinking, “I want to do that! I want to help people feel safe.”
Q: What’s the best part about your job? Why do you love doing what you do?
A: The best part of my job is that it is never routine. When I get into my cruiser every day, I’m not sure what calls for service I am going to, who I will meet or what I will face. Additionally, I was born and raised in Sudbury, so being able to serve the community I am from is very special to me.
Q: What advice would you give to a girl or woman aspiring to join the policing profession/law enforcement field?
A: The hours may be long and night shift may never get easier (for me anyways!), but a career in law enforcement is rewarding and fulfilling. I’ve always thought that if a goal doesn’t scare you, then it’s not a big enough goal. So, if the thought of becoming a police officer excites you and scares you at the same time, then get after it! Remember - you can do hard things!
