International Women’s Day is a day of unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action and is celebrated in countries around the world. This year's International Women’s Day (March 8th) may have come and gone, but we want to celebrate the women who work and volunteer with the Greater Sudbury Police Service all month long. Today and every day, we celebrate the strength they bring to our Service.

Meet Detective Constable Stephanie Duchene of our Criminal Investigations Division: detective standing with her medals

Q: What inspired you to become a Police Officer with the Greater Sudbury Police Service?

A: I always had an immense interest in crime and once I became a police officer I recognized that I enjoyed the challenge in solving complex cases. I became a Detective and my cases were primarily Sexual Assaults. As I was helping victims of all ages of Sexual Assaults, I later also became the Sexual Assault Coordinator, and in turn this encouraged me further to help Survivors and assist them in closing a traumatic chapter in their lives.

Q: What’s the best part about your job? Why do you love doing what you do?

A: The best part of my job is seeing that I made a difference in someone’s life from my own community with whom I had an investigation, hearing from them afterwards and being informed of their positive life outcomes.

Q: What advice would you give to a girl or woman aspiring to join the policing profession/law enforcement field?

A: Women have various qualities and traits that assist in becoming exemplary officers and investigators. Women often approach situations differently and uniquely where positive outcomes and resolutions are attained. Policing is very rewarding and very diverse where members work collectively as a dynamic team!
