International Women’s Day is recognized every year on March 8th and this year’s theme is #BreakTheBias. It is an important day to acknowledge the achievements and contributions of women and to renew discussion about the importance of gender equality in Canada and around the world.

On March 8th and every day, we celebrate the women who work at GSPS and the strength they bring to our Service.

Leading up to International Women’s Day and throughout the month, we’d like to introduce you to some of the amazing women of our GSPS family.

Meet Staff Sergeant Valerie Tiplady: police woman smiling

Q) What inspired you to become a Police Officer with GSPS?

A) All my education and previous work experience motivated me towards a career in policing. I was inspired to work with the community from both a proactive and reactive police response.

Q) What’s the best part about your job? Why do you love doing what you do?

A) I have been fortunate throughout my 28 years of policing to gain experience and enhance my skills working in a variety of specialized branches and in my journey to become a Staff Sergeant. I am currently assigned to the Community Engagement and Community Mobilization Section where I work with several community partners to address community issues from a multi-agency problem solving approach. Working in this unit has true meaning to me bringing me back to why I was drawn to policing in the first place.

Q) What advice would you give to a young girl or woman aspiring to join the policing profession/law enforcement field?

A) Volunteer. Know your community and the services available and how you can contribute. Take care of your physical and mental wellbeing to prepare yourself for a very demanding but fulfilling career.
