International Women’s Day is recognized every year on March 8th. It is an important day to acknowledge the achievements and contributions of women and to renew discussion about the importance of gender equality in Canada and around the world.

On March 8th and every day, we celebrate the women who work and volunteer at GSPS and the strength they bring to our Service.

Leading up to International Women’s Day and throughout the month, we’d like to introduce you to some of the amazing women of our GSPS family.

Q: What inspired you to become a Special Constable with the Greater Sudbury Police Service?

A: I have always dreamed of becoming a Police Officer from the age of seven. Every time I passed the nearby station, I would fantasize about it to my mom. She always encouraged me and told me to go for it. I was inspired to become a Special Constable as a stepping stone to gain experience to pursue my lifelong dream career as a Police Constable. I want to protect and serve my community while at the same time building relationships with those in my community. I want to be the difference in my community and what better way than to be a part of the GSPS team.

Q: What’s the best part about your job? Why do you love doing what you do?

A: The best part of my job is that every day is never the same. I get to meet several people from different paths of life and backgrounds. I love doing what I am doing because it is a very problem solving-based role which keeps my brain working to find solutions.

Q: What advice would you give to a girl or woman aspiring to join the policing profession/law enforcement field?

A: The advice I would give is to never stop working. Never stop trying. Always ask questions and ask “What can I do better or do to improve for my next time around?”. I heard several 'no’s' until I got a 'yes'. Use each time as a learning moment and that it was meant to be at that point in time because something better or more is waiting. Volunteer, stay educated, stay fit and healthy physically, emotionally and mentally. Never let anyone get in the way of your goals, dreams or aspirations. If you want it, go get it and prove all those who doubt you wrong.
