Just before 8:20 p.m. on July 13, 2025, our 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Centre was contacted by the Ontario Provincial Police regarding a dangerous driver. Information provided was that the OPP had received numerous complaints of a vehicle being driven erratically on Highway 17 traveling westbound.
Officers in an unmarked vehicle located the vehicle on Elm Street at Durham Street. The vehicle was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, the driver accelerated quickly and at a high rate of speed, spinning the tires of the vehicle.
The officers in the unmarked vehicle followed the vehicle from a distance and requested additional assistance from marked cruisers.
Officers coordinated a rolling stop on MR35 at Montee Principale as it was determined that the driver and vehicle were a danger to public safety. While at a red light on MR35 at Montee Principale, an officer in a marked cruiser activated the emergency lights and sirens to indicate a traffic stop, while the unmarked vehicle and another police cruiser were positioned to complete the rolling stop.
The driver accelerated quickly in attempt to avoid the stop, however, was not able to maneuver around the vehicles, sliding into the unmarked police vehicle.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Officers approached the vehicle and directed the driver to exit the vehicle, however the driver would not comply.
Officers removed the driver from the vehicle and placed the driver under arrest.
Upon searching the individual incident to arrest, officers located drug paraphernalia.
The driver was transported to police headquarters where a Drug Recognition Expert completed an evaluation confirming the driver was impaired by drugs.
As a result of the incident, 62-year-old, Slawomir Kawa of Southern Ontario was charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada;
• Operation while Impaired

Slawomir Kawa attended Bail Court on July 14, 2025, to answer to the charges.
