In November of 2024, an illegal psilocybin (Magic Mushroom) dispensary opened in the downtown core. Psilocybin is a controlled drug under Schedule III of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and selling psilocybin carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.
Members of the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) immediately engaged with the building owner and the store employees for the purpose of education about the CDSA. The store employees voluntarily shutdown the store and enforcement was not necessary.
In April of 2025, GSPS received information that the dispensary had now moved across the street from its previous location and was preparing to open for business. The DEU transitioned the approach from education to enforcement, and a drug investigation was initiated.
On July 2, 2025, detectives from the DEU assisted by members of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and Intelligence Unit executed a CDSA search warrant on Elm Street, a business operated as "Shroomyz". Two employees who were actively selling psilocybin were arrested inside the business.
Officers seized over 300 packages of psilocybin products including dry psilocybin, psilocybin edibles and psilocybin capsules. Officers also seized over $18,000 cash from the sale of psilocybin. The value of the seized drugs is $16,500.
As a result, the two individuals were charged with the following offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and Criminal Code of Canada:
- Possession of a Schedule III controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, to wit: Psilocybin.
- Trafficking of a Schedule III controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, to wit: Psilocybin.
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000.00.
Both individuals were released with a future court date to answer to the charges. Their names cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.
We would like to remind our community that selling and possessing psilocybin is still illegal and officers will continue with enforcement under the CDSA.
