Shortly before 12:00 p.m. on May 14, 2025, officers were dispatched to the area of Beech Street at Elm Street in relation to individuals and a vehicle believed to be involved in drug trafficking after City of Greater Sudbury Municipal By-law Officers contacted police.
Officers from Patrol Operations located the vehicle on Elm Street and conducted a traffic stop. When officers approached the vehicle to speak with the driver, they observed what were believed to be drugs on the front seat. While patrol officers were on scene, members of our Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) provided additional information leading to reasonable and probable grounds for arrest.
The driver was placed under arrest for Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking a Schedule I Substance and searched incident to arrest where officers located over $5,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of crime. The three passengers were also taken into custody.
Members of DEU and the Integrated Traffic Safety Unit (ITSU) arrived on scene to assist with the searches of the individuals and vehicle incident to arrest. While searching the vehicle, officers located a loaded handgun, 777 grams of Cocaine, 88 grams of Fentanyl and drug packaging materials. The estimated value of the drugs is $86,500.
As a result of the investigation, 49-year-old, Denis Desormeaux, 44-year-old, Benjamin Migwans, 39-year-old, David Alatalo and 33-year-old, Marlena McNichol have been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA):
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking a Schedule I Substance x2
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Careless Use of a Firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession at Unauthorized Place
- Unauthorized Possession of Firearm in Motor Vehicle
- Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime - Over $5,000
All four individuals were held in police custody and will attend Bail Court today, May 15, 2025.
