At around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 15th, 2024, the Greater Sudbury Police Service received reports of a disturbance on Cedar Street involving two males who assaulted two other males in an unprovoked attack. During the assault, the suspects uttered racial slurs while one of the suspects removed a garment of religious significance from one of the victims. The victims sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident.
Due to the hate-based nature of this incident, the matter was assigned to a Detective in the Major Crime Section of our Criminal Investigations Division who is specifically trained as a Hate-bias/Hate-motivated crime investigator.
As a result of the investigation, Police have identified and arrested the individuals believed to be responsible for the attack.
A 20-year old man from Greater Sudbury was arrested without incident on December 19th, 2024 and charged with the following offences pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada:
- Assault X2
- Assault Causing Bodily Harm
- Robbery
He was released on an Undertaking and will appear in court on January 22nd, 2025 to answer to the charges.
Another 20-year old man from Greater Sudbury was arrested without incident on December 21st, 2024 and charged with Assault pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada. He was released on an Undertaking and will appear in court on January 22nd, 2025 to answer to the charge.
Their names cannot be released as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.
