As a result of the ongoing investigation into the double homicide at a local hotel, Detectives from the Major Crime Section of our Criminal Investigation Division have been granted an Arrest Warrant for 33 year old Joel Roy for First Degree Murder x2 as well as Attempted Murder of an 18 year old man who was present during the shooting, however he was not injured. Joel Roy has also been charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking as it is believed that he was trafficking illicit drugs out of the hotel at the time of the incident. This is the same 33 year old man previously charged with numerous firearm offences on December 20, 2022 in connection with this incident. Joel Roy remains in custody with a Court date of December 28, 2022 in relation to the numerous firearms charges.

Through working in collaboration with the Coroner’s Office, the second deceased individual has been identified as a 38  year old man from Greater Sudbury. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.

UPDATE

Through the ongoing investigation, it has been determined that two of the individuals in police custody were not involved in this incident, however, they have been charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 in relation to the Theft of a Motor Vehicle. Both individuals attended Bail Court today to answer to the charge.

The third individual, a 33 year old man from Greater Sudbury was originally arrested on scene on an outstanding Arrest Warrant for Fail to Comply with Probation Order. Upon searching the man, officers located two firearms.

He has been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada;

  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose x2
  • Careless Use of a Firearm x2
  • Breach of Firearms Regulation x2
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon x2
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm x2
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm x2
  • Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm x2
  • Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order x6
  • Fail to Comply with Prohibition Order

He will be attending Bail Court today to answer to the charges. His name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the Court process.

Officers remain on scene at the hotel as the investigation into the incident is ongoing. We believe that there are additional individual(s) involved in this incident.

This is a targeted and isolated incident.

ORIGINAL

Shortly after 2:00 a.m. this morning, December 20, 2022, officers were dispatched to a hotel on Paris Street at Walford Road in relation to a Weapons complaint as there were reports of gun shots.

Upon arrival, officers located two men who had sustained what are believed to be gunshot wounds. A 27 year old man was transported to the hospital by City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased by medical professionals. The second man who has not yet been identified was pronounced deceased on scene.

Post mortems will be conducted through the Coroner’s Office in order to assist in confirming the cause of death and in order to confirm the identity of the second individual.  

We currently have three people believed to be involved in the incident in custody and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Information related to these individuals and the charges will be provided as the investigation unfolds.  

This is believed to be a targeted and isolated incident.

Officers will remain on scene and in the area in order to canvass for information and video surveillance footage.
