The Greater Sudbury Police Service is revitalizing its Multi-Faith Chaplain Program (formerly the Spiritual Team) to provide support to our Members, as well as participate in community events as an extension of the Service.  

As the diversity of Greater Sudbury and the GSPS continue to grow, we are looking for new members of all faiths to join this volunteer program. Our aim is to create a multi-dimensional, volunteer program that will be comprised of a multi-faith group of leaders to support the spiritual and/or religious wellbeing of our Members.  

 

Responsibilities: 
  • Being available to the families of Members involved in traumatic incidents.
  • Assisting with the critical incident stress debriefing of Members.
  • Conducting invocations at Service functions as requested.
  • Counseling Members as needed from a spiritual/religious perspective. 
  • Accompanying a Police Officer to assist with notification of any suicide, death or serious injury.
  • Visiting with sick or injured Members at their home or in the hospital. 
  • Perform weddings, funerals and other important events. 
  • Organizing and conducting events designed to enhance morale and wellbeing of Service Members and their families.
  • Advising the Wellness Coordinator and Multi-Faith Advisor in all matters of a spiritual and/or religious nature involving the Greater Sudbury Police Service and performance of police duties in the community. 
  • Act as liaison with local faith associations and on matters pertaining to the moral, spiritual, and religious welfare of Members. 
  • Assisting in providing training to Police personnel as required. 
Qualifications:
  • Authorization or endorsement from a faith group. 
  • 5+ years’ experience as a leader within their spiritual and/or religious affiliation. 
  • Working knowledge of diverse world religions, spiritual traditions and secular perspectives. 
  • Experience with counselling. 
  • Education in Theology, Divinity, Chaplaincy or related fields an asset. 
  • Crisis intervention certification an asset.

  • Ability to evaluate and address the spiritual, emotional and religious needs of Members. 
  • Strong emotional intelligence, empathy and active listening skills.  
  • Strong communication skills. 
  • Understanding cultural, ethical and spiritual systems that shape a person’s life.  
  • Ability to assess and address emotional/spiritual needs without imposing personal beliefs. 
  • Ability to foster trust with individuals. 
  • Ability to remain calm and provide stability during traumatic or high-pressure situations. 
  • Confidentiality and ethical decision making. 
  • Trauma-informed practice.
  • Bilingualism is an asset. 

Please note that successful candidates will be required to complete the Canadian Police Chaplain Association Credential Program upon hire.
